75% of Veterans Miss Out on Disability Benefits—Don't Be One of Them

Jason Pike

Have you collected all the VA benefits you deserve? If you served, you deserve it. It’s a simple truth that veterans have earned support after sacrificing for their country, yet many still don’t realize the extent of benefits available to them. Even though I wrote a book titled Out of the Uniform, Back into Civilian Life, a self-help guide for veterans transitioning, I’m continually shocked by statistics on how many miss out on critical VA benefits. Recently, I read that an astounding 75% of veterans receive no disability compensation at all. This is particularly surprising because many veterans have health concerns or injuries directly connected to their service. If you haven’t taken steps to claim your benefits, you’re potentially leaving essential support on the table.

Personally, I wasn’t aware of the VA disability process until my 27th year of service. Even after decades in the military, navigating this transition was a learning curve. Fortunately, I was able to apply and secure a decent disability rating, which has provided valuable assistance in my post-service life. However, it’s concerning to know that only a minority of veterans successfully apply for and obtain disability compensation. Whether due to lack of knowledge, limited access to information, or the daunting nature of the process, far too many veterans miss out on the benefits they rightly deserve. It’s important to remember that seeking disability compensation is a right and a recognition of the sacrifices veterans have made.

If you haven’t yet explored your VA disability benefits, now is the time to take action. For 2024, the VA has made the application process more accessible than ever. You can log into their website, call the VA, or find a VA-accredited representative to guide you through the steps. The process may seem complex, but numerous resources are available to make it easier. Start by visiting the VA’s website on how to apply, where you’ll find step-by-step guidance on eligibility, documentation, and support. You served; you deserve the support you’ve earned. Don’t let these benefits go unclaimed.
