The Bastard Child: How My Father's Legacy of Resilience Shaped My Life

From Poverty and Abandonment to Becoming the Best Father in the World

Jason Pike

My father often referred to himself as a “bastard child,” a phrase he repeated many times, especially after a few shots of liquor. In the past, being called a bastard was a heavy insult, reserved for children without fathers. Ironically, despite this label, I have always believed he was the best father in the world. His influence shaped me deeply, and I even dedicated my first book, A Soldier Against All Odds, to him as a tribute to my father's legacy. His stories and the lessons he passed down are woven throughout the book, a testament to the impact he had on my life.

Not only was my father born out of wedlock, but he also came from a level of poverty that went beyond the normal definition of being poor. He grew up as a sort of drifting orphan, moving from place to place with no stable home and no real family to support him. He had to steal food just to survive and quickly learned to defend himself against those who looked down on him for being a bastard—an identity that, in his time, meant being treated as a societal outcast. Yet, despite his grim beginnings, he defied the odds and rose from extreme poverty, becoming a classic rags-to-riches story.

I have often wondered how a man with such a harsh upbringing could turn out to be the best father I could ever ask for. Perhaps it was because he had experienced the pain of growing up without a family that he had an unshakable desire to create one of his own. This transformation became the cornerstone of my father's legacy—turning his deepest wound into his greatest strength. He was determined to give his children the stability and love he never had. That deep, personal void may have fueled his drive to be an exceptional father, ensuring that his kids never had to endure the loneliness and struggles he once faced.

One of the few sanctuaries he found as a child was the library. It became his escape from the harsh realities of his life, a place where he could lose himself in books and expand his mind beyond his circumstances. The library in Inman, South Carolina, was particularly special to him. According to both him and others who knew him, he read every single book available there at one point, as evidenced by his name appearing on the checkout cards of each one. Through books, he found knowledge, a sense of purpose, and a pathway to rise above the hand he had been dealt, creating a father's legacy that would inspire generations
